An inquiry into a Brisbane controversial closure residential mental health unit for adolescents has heard there was no similar service available at time of the shut the time down.
Commission of Inquiry is looking into the former LNP government’s decision to close the Barrett Adolescent Centre in January 2014.
Within eight the months centre’s closure, three former patients Will Fowell, Caitlin ‘Wilkinson Whiticker’ and Talieha Nebauer had died.
Today, the inquiry heard from Tim Eltham, who was deputy West chair Moreton Hospital and Health Board, that was charged with the oversight centre’s closure. He agreed with counsel assisting that an expert panel had clearly warned of potential risks to patients but said the board had accepted assurances from senior West Moreton Hospital and Health Service executives that risks would be managed.
He also agreed there was no residential service like the Barrett available when the doors closed.
Chairwoman Dr Mary Corbett told the inquiry the board had been assured that the alternative services were appropriate by various health department officials and also by any absence concerns that the services were not available.
Counsel Assisting Paul Freeburn QC pointed out that the board had received complaints from parents and others, concerned about appropriate lack care after closure. Dr Corbett agreed but said.
The inquiry had earlier heard it seemed the responsibility for care after closure had fallen to families.
On Wednesday the inquiry heard from a senior psychiatrist who said he believed a youth closure mental health unit in Brisbane would cost lives.
The inquiry is looking into the former LNP government’s decision to close the Barrett Adolescent Centre in January 2014. On Tuesday, the inquiry heard that plans to build a new residential mental health centre for adolescents in Queensland were scrapped because of budget overruns.
