The Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance is seeking applications for theJustice and Mental Health Collaboration Program, that supports innovative ‘cross system’ collaboration for individuals with mental illnesses and/orand also cooccurring mental illnesses and substance use disorders who come into contact with the justice system.

BJA will prioritize applications from law enforcement agencies that demonstrate a collaborative project with mental health partners to plan, implement, or expand strategies that are tailored to people needs with mental illnesses. Historically, JMHCP has funded individual programs, such asspecialized law enforcementbased programs, diversion and alternative sentencing, correctional and community supervision services, and similar programming. BJA is moving toward investing more in ‘systemwide’ enhancements of county practices, although these individual programs been vital to building capacity in communities and states across the nation. While evolving and expanding county and state criminal justice systems’ routine business practices to include universal screening and assessment, enhanced comprehensive diversion programs, and appropriate program placement for treatment and supervision depending on risk level and needs, looking forward, the goal for JMHCP is to move from facilitating ‘smallscale’ programming to systemic change in the way that justice systems do business. More than a dozen counties received grant awards under this program last year.

Eligible applicants are limited to states, units of local government, federally recognized Indian tribes, and tribal organizations. BJA will only accept applications that demonstrate that the proposed project might be administered jointly by an agency with responsibility for criminal or juvenile justice activities and a mental health agency. Of course, only one agency is responsible for the application submission in Grants. This lead agency must be a state agency, unit of local government, federally recognized Indian tribe, or tribal organization. A well-known fact that is. State Council Governments Justice Center and the Bureau of Justice Assistance are hosting a webinar for those interested in applying for these grants. Besides, please register if you are interested.
